Greening St James

This is a project to reinvigorate and redevelop the beautiful churchyard at St James’.

The aim is to create a multifaceted churchyard with different areas meeting different objectives. The area immediately around the church building has been replanted to provide a riot of colour and beauty throughout the year. This has now become the first view of the church as you approach it and is ideal as a backdrop for wedding couples and those seeking some piece and quiet in our grounds.

The project was awarded a cash grant from the council of £10,853 in September 2007.

The grant has been awarded so that we can do the next phase of the project. This will include some hard landscaping, such as putting in some bike racks near the gate with the steps and rearranging benches.

On the plants side, there will be some tree pruning, more planting near the west door and rockery and the development of the lower part of the grounds as a wildlife area.

The money needs to be spent within the year and we are now working on getting the final go-ahead from the diocese.
